Fall Festival of Reading Enchantment

On October 28th Lehigh Acres Middle School (Lee County) turned their Media Center into a Fall Festival of reading enchantment for their students. Every child at Lehigh Acres entered a celebration atmosphere where books were displayed by themes on tables for their enjoyment. The best part was they were able to take one home to keep. Each child was brought to the center with their Social Studies teacher to choose a book and then they were taken back to class to hear the background of the RIF project that sponsored the free books. This would be the first of three distributions for the students. Each child was also introduced to the history of book plates and given their own to decorate for their book. The excitement that filled the air was contagious and students could be seen throughout the school reading books, talking about what they were reading, and promising to exchange books as soon as they finished the one they had chosen with their friends. The hardest part was choosing just one! This day made all the hours of hard work by the reading coach, Linda Gobran worth the time and energy she put into the event worth it. Parent volunteer also assisted with the project. Ms. Mandy Jones went above and beyond and came the day of the distribution to hand out bookplates, bookmarks, pencils, keep books in order, talk to students about books, and greet students with a friendly smile all day long! Other special guest such as Principals Joe Pitura and Jennifer Redhead, Maria Schneider from the Curriculum and Staff Development office, the school media specialist, and several reading teachers were spotted discussing books with students and smiles were found all day long while students and adults enjoyed talking and discussing favorite authors, themes, and genres.

Learning Communities at
Everglades City School

Nestled away in the Everglades is a quiet little K-12 school, Everglades City School, that has what many schools have lost as we move into our world of “more.” Coordinators Pamela L Rader (FLaRE) and Pam Vickaryous (RFPD) have been working with the Reading Coach Ms. Oglesby and the Program Specialist Ms. Sneider as they look for ways to engage the 139 students. This year both the elementary and the secondary teachers have worked professionally in learning communities around book studies to discuss how to actively engage students with text. This discussion takes on new challenges when dealing with small class sizes.

Small class sizes may at first glance look appealing, however it becomes difficult when students don’t have other perspectives to look to and teachers have served the same student for multiple grades. Everglades City School however is determined to find a way to reach their students. They know this population is unique. With the support of Principal Bobby Jones they continue to research new ideas and work to move practices into the classroom.

Although this school has unique barriers to overcome, they wouldn’t change it for anything. The staff knows their students need them and the students have a sense of belonging that is often lost in larger settings. When you walk onto the campus of Everglades City School you know you are somewhere special. According to the administration and leadership it is because of the students.
