Osceola Middle School and Yearling Middle School have joined efforts to improve reading with their students by implementing a school wide initiative-SURF. SURF is an acronym that stands for Supervised Uninterrupted Reading Fun. SURF is a secondary reading program in which both Osceola Middle School and Yearling Middle School participate daily. SURF is not just sustained silent reading (SSR). During SURF students are asked to read a book based on their independent reading level for a minimum of 20 minutes; however, SURF contains the critical element of teacher monitoring. During SURF teachers meet with students periodically to discuss the text and monitor the student’s comprehension.
Literacy Coaches Nichole Kamphuis (OMS) and Jenny Ward (YMS) wanted to extend the time students read in school by having them read at home as well. In a recent town parade, both schools created a float promoting their SURF theme. Students, surrounded by palm trees, hammocks, and sand, were reading books of their choice while community members watched from the sides of the street. This effort was made to get the information on SURF and the importance of reading out to parents and community members.
Community and family members loved it, and they now share the passion of Osceola’s and Yearling’s dream-to have students embrace the love of reading in and out of school. This dual effort by both schools reflects their strong commitment to students and reading. Great work, OMS and YMS!!
