As stated in the July 28, 2006 memo from Dr. Lefsky, CAR-PD would not satisfy
the requirements for the reading endorsement, but a complementary
CAR-PD Plus package would be developed, so that an academic content area
teacher taking CAR-PD and CAR-PD Plus, could earn the academic reading
endorsement. A May 22, 2008 memo outlined the components of this optional professional development package.
CAR-PD Plus is designed to provide professional development in reading
instruction for content area teachers. The 150 hours of professional development provided in CAR-PD Plus is an add-on to the original 150 hour CAR-PD
package that consisted of Module 1 - FOR-PD (60 hours), Module 2 - the
CAR-PD Academy (60 hours), and Module 3 - Practicum Part A (30 hours).
Successful completion of CAR-PD Plus (along with
the original CAR-PD
package) satisfies the requirements for the Florida K-12
Reading Endorsement.
The CAR-PD Plus package includes Module Four (60 hours), Module Five -
Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction
(60 hours), and
Module 6 - Practicum Part B (30 hours).
Module Four is broken into two components: 40 hours of face-to-face time and
20 hours of investigative activities. Sessions 1 – 11 incorporate readings and
written reflections as investigative activities, while the remaining sessions assign
performance tasks related to the topics of assessment, student performance,
and portfolios.
Module Five can be any course/professional that satisifies Competency 4 and Competency 5 and has been reviewed and approved by Just Read, Florida!,
which include:
Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction (FADI),
is
provided online through the North East Florida Educational Consortium
(NEFEC).
FADI fully satisfies Competencies Four and Five of the Reading
Endorsement.

Explicit through FDLRS. Offered free of charge through FDLRS

and Competency 5 and has been reviewed and approved by Just Read, Florida! for inclusion in the district Reading Endorsement Add-on plan.
Module Six is a 30 hour practicum that complements the 30 hour practicum
completed in the CAR-PD Package (Module 3, Practicum Part A). It includes the
investigation of appropriate phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency
instructional practices for high-progress, average progress, and non-traditional
learners in content area classrooms.
